Reflection is an AI journal and coach with a serious privacy posture. Kept is not a coach, and the entries are about other people.
What Reflection is
Reflection describes itself as an AI journal that coaches you in real time and turns entries into insights. It runs on iOS, Android, macOS and web with sync across all of them, and has an "Ask Your Journal" feature for querying patterns, people, or how you felt at some point in the past.
Its privacy claims are the strongest in this comparison set: AES-256 at rest and TLS in transit, entries never used to train AI models, no ads and no data sales, and ISO/IEC 27001, SOC 1 and 2, and GDPR compliance.
We are noting that plainly because Kept does not make an encryption claim, and it would be dishonest to run a privacy comparison that skipped past it.

The difference that matters
Pull versus push, and it decides the whole product. Reflection is excellent at answering a question you thought to ask. Kept is built for the case where you did not think to ask — you are about to see Maya, and nothing in your head flags that she had an interview three weeks ago.
That is the harder half. Remembering to look something up requires already remembering that there is something to look up, which is the exact faculty that fails. The lifelogging research landed on the same conclusion: review is where the value gets made, and an archive nobody opens does nothing.
The second difference is what the AI is allowed to touch. Reflection coaches. Kept’s AI faces inward only, because messages known to involve AI are judged less authentic — so the moment we draft your words, the thing we were trying to produce stops being worth producing.
Where Reflection beats Kept
Reflection has real security certifications, cross-platform sync, and an explicit no-AI-training commitment. Kept has none of those things — no certifications, no desktop app, no sync at all. If audited security posture is what you are shopping for, Reflection has published more than we have.
Don’t pick Kept if: You want coaching, cross-device sync, or a documented compliance posture. Kept’s privacy story is architectural — the data stays on your phone — rather than certified, and those are not the same thing.
